1In 973, the famous deep-sea explorer Mel Fisher discovered the wreckage of an old warship, the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which had sunk in a hurricane in 1622 while sailing from the New World to Spain. It was the beginning of a treasure hunt that later became known as the greatest treasure hunt. And the long legal battle. Nuestra Señora de Atocha was a Spanish treasure ship. A ship carrying 260 passengers and treasure worth around Rs 40 crore sank in a storm. Three centuries later the question of who owned the ship’s treasure was raised in court. Eventually the verdict came in favor of the explorer.

The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Atocha in Madrid, Spain is named following Nuestra Señora de Atocha. The ship carrying treasures to Spain via the ports of Cartagena (Colombia), Porto Bello (Panama) and Havana in New Granada contained copper, silver, gold, tobacco, gems and indigo. A mighty army also traveled with the ship. The ship was also used at the time to provide security for other Spanish ships on their way with treasure. Nuestra Señora de Atocha was carrying valuable cargo, including 40 tons of gold and silver, and 70 pounds of exquisite Colombian emeralds known for their quality and value when they sank. Although the Spanish rescuers tried to recover the treasure, the hurricane that was raging in the area at the time thwarted all such efforts. Due to constant storms, no remains of the ship might be found. Later such efforts were abandoned.

Three centuries later, in 1969, Mel Fisher embarked on a dangerous and extensive quest to find the treasure of Nuestra Señora de Atocha. In 1973, he found some of the gold bars on the ship. In 1975, five of the ship’s cannons were recovered. He continued his exploration. In 1980, exploration intensified with the discovery of the remains of the sister ship to the Atocha, the Santa Margarita. Mel Fisher lost his wife and son during the exploration. But he was not ready to give up exploration.

Three centuries later, Mel Fisher recovered 24 tons of silver ingots, ingots and coins, including 125 gold bars and 1,200 pounds of silverware, worth an estimated $400 million (Rs. 33,32,70,00,000). It also found remarkable artifacts, including 20 bronze cannons, ancient navigational instruments from the 1600s, and historically significant Native American items. In 2014, it became the world’s most valuable shipwreck treasure hunt, making it into the Guinness World Records.
