Following these eight healthy habits might save you valuable healthy years — or at least prevent you from aging a little faster than expected.
HEALTH – It is not possible to slow down time but, according to researchers, it would be possible to slow down the aging of your body. This is what an American study relayed by the media New Scientist highlighted, by comparing the “chronological” age (that on marital status) and the “biological” age (that which reflects the state of health of the body) of more than 6,500 people with healthy lifestyles varied.
According to the results of the study, by following eight essential recommendations, we might ensure better longevity, and perhaps even a body younger than its actual age. The good news is that these good habits are nothing new: they are already known to be those that promote good cardiovascular health.
Eight good habits essential for health
Determined by the American Heart Association, these eight good habits are:
Do not smoke or quit (you can also take advantage of the tobacco-free month to get started); Have regular physical activity (the WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of intense physical activity per week );Follow a balanced and varied diet, with vegetables, nuts and lean proteins;Sleep between seven and nine hours per night;Maintain a healthy weight;Control your cholesterol level;Be attentive to your blood sugar level ;Pay attention to your blood pressure and try to keep it within the healthy range.
A biological age on average lower than the civil age
To arrive at these conclusions, the researchers established the “phenotypic age” or “biological age” of the body, measured by specific markers such as glucose or creatinine levels. Their results were then compared to their “chronological” age – that indicated by their marital status.
By following a cohort of more than 6,500 people, researchers were able to observe that those who most rigorously respected care eight ressential recommendations of the American Heart Association had a “phenotypic” age lower than their “chronological” age, the difference being up to six years.
Those who followed them the least had, conversely, an average biological age higher than their civil age. On average, study participants with good cardiovascular health were 41 years old but had a “biological age” of 36 years. Those with poor cardiovascular health were older, with an average age of 53 years. But their “biological age” was even higher, reaching 57 years.
While you wait for the fountain of youth, following these eight good habits might therefore save you valuable years of health – or at least prevent you from aging a little faster than expected.
