[NOWnews今日新聞] Because there is no need to walk up the stairs, people now prefer to live in elevator buildings instead of apartments. However, an 80-year-old man in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province objected to the installation of an elevator in his building and even refused to pay for the elevator project. Unexpectedly, following the elevator was installed , the old man actually regretted using it, but was collectively rejected by the 32 households in the same building. A group of people even went to court because of this.
According to comprehensive mainland media reports, the incident occurred in a 9-story residential building in a community in Liwan District, Guangzhou. However, in 2017, some residents proposed that the building should install an elevator. They asked 44 residents for their opinions, and 32 of them were willing. Together they funded the construction of an elevator, but an 80-year-old man who lived on the third floor strongly opposed the installation of an elevator and therefore did not participate in the fund-raising.

After the elevator was completed, the old man expressed his wish to take the elevator and expressed his hope to obtain the right to use the elevator following paying the additional funds. However, this move made the other 32 households very dissatisfied because of the old man’s objections. , so the elevator installation was delayed for a whole year, so 32 households collectively refused to allow the old man to use the elevator.
The old man was unconvinced and took the matter to court, saying that he was willing to pay 10,077 yuan (approximately NT$42,000) in fundraising to obtain the right to use the elevator, but it was extremely unreasonable to be rejected by most residents. After a court hearing, it was stated that the elevator was a common part of the building in terms of usage. The old man and other residents had the right to use and jointly manage the elevator. Therefore, the use of the elevator did not require the consent of the majority of residents.

The court ruled that following the old man paid the fund-raising amount, the representative of the resident of the residence might provide the old man with an elevator card and enjoy the same rights to use the elevator as ordinary residents. This ruling made 32 residents still very dissatisfied and appealed to the court, but in the end was dismissed.
