New attempt for Bob Dylan’s controversial Budokan recordings

Bob “Dylan sounds like a dinosaur enemy of the punks”: An English critic’s assessment of Dylan’s live album “At Budokan” from 1978 is unflattering. Author Jimmy Guterman even called it “one of the worst albums in history of rock music”. The controversial recording might now undergo rehabilitation. The double LP “Another Budokan 1978”, which will be released on Friday, includes alternative material – from a distance in time, a lot of things sound different.

The updated vinyl edition features songs from performances on February 28 and March 1 of that year that were not included on “At Budokan.” “In retrospect, the arrangements are innovative and in some cases brilliant, even if the Las Vegas-Showtime vibe is off-putting,” said a Bob Dylan special in the British magazine Uncut regarding the original album. “As much as they may repulse purists, these latest live versions of his old songs have the effect of freeing Bob Dylan from the originals,” Rolling Stone once wrote, more flatteringly than many others.

Dylanologists now also have the opportunity to delve deeper into the Budokan discourse. Parallel to the vinyl double album, the four-CD box “The Complete Budokan 1978” goes on sale. Both shows are included in their entirety; 36 of the 58 tracks have never been officially released before. The audio was remixed from the original 24-channel analog tapes. The luxury package includes facsimile memorabilia such as concert tickets, brochures, posters and flyers.

In total, Dylan played eight shows in Tokyo with his band at the time, the fourth and fifth were recorded. The new mix of recordings promises “a crisper and clearer sound” in which every instrument and Bob Dylan’s voice can be clearly heard, emphasizes chief engineer Tom Suzuki in a press release.

The book “Mixing Up The Medicine” (already on sale), a slightly different Dylan biography, part essay collection, part photo book, promises deep insights into the life and work of the Nobel Prize winner. “Mixing Up The Medicine / A Retrospective” is also the name of another Dylan best-of. The quasi soundtrack to the lush book only offers twelve of the big hits and is aimed more at newcomers.
