Since its genesis in 2011, Conect has emerged as an essential force in the Tunisian economic fabric. Faced with major challenges, the confederation has been able to forge a strong identity as a credible alternative to single employers, forging solid links with its members, public authorities and opening up to international horizons.
The Confederation of Citizen Enterprises of Tunisia (Conect) held its 3rd yesterdaye National conference on the theme “Economic sectors: Threats and aspirations, financing, market access and economic complexity”.
Tarek Cherif, president of the confederation, took the floor, not only to reflect on the twelve years of dedicated service to Conect, but also to take a forward-looking look at the future at a time when the confederation has succeeded, today Today, to have an influential position in economic debates, while advocating for the interests of TSMEs, the real engine of the Tunisian economy.
A journey of transformation and commitment
Going back to 2011, Tarek Cherif placed the birth of Conect in a changing national context, a consequence of the events of January. At that time, the bold idea of an alternative to single employers was far from being unanimously accepted. However, driven by a deep conviction, the members laid the foundations of an adventure which would become Conect.
The primary objective was clear: to create a new dynamic, a solid, credible and representative alternative. Tarek Cherif underlined the creation of a web of trust with members, public authorities and the gradual expansion internationally through the creation of a dedicated structure.
The president then modestly affirmed that the success of Conect in the Tunisian socio-economic landscape is the result of teamwork. He underlined the collective character, the in-depth work, and the perseverance which were necessary to meet the challenges encountered from the first steps. He also paid tribute to the women, men and young people who were the pillars of the confederation, displaying a dedication which made it possible to achieve the ambitious objectives of Conect.
Future challenges and priorities
Addressing future challenges, Tarek Cherif stressed the importance of preserving gains and consolidating achievements. He highlighted the crucial role of Conect as spokesperson for its members, in particular TSMEs which constitute more than 90% of the Tunisian economic fabric.
The confederation will continue to play an essential role in economic debates, by maintaining an open and constructive dialogue with public authorities and other stakeholders. Reflection in action will continue to guide decisions, with Conect as a source of forward thinking and a driving force for a legislative, regulatory and tax framework favorable to investment.
As Tarek Cherif prepares to pass the torch following 12 years of dedicated service to Conect, he expressed his confidence in the new team which will certainly be able to continue the noble mission of the organization. He salutes the pool of skills and talents within Conect, ready to meet the challenges of a changing world.
A message of hope
In conclusion, Tarek Cherif delivered a message full of audacity and reflection on the journey of the confederation. He recalled the start of Conect, once considered “madness” but today recognized as a key player, both at the African and international level. He also insisted on his commitment to Tunisia, rejecting the idea of creating something simply to remain in a position of power. According to him, Tunisia needs a structure to stimulate debates and ideas, elements that he considered crucial in the current landscape.
Deciphering the crucial need for debates of ideas, Cherif underlined the importance of this dialogue to develop perspectives consistent with Tunisian reality. It highlighted Conect’s successes, demonstrating that national and regional debates have generated influential ideas and perspectives, strengthening the confederation’s advocacy position.
Cherif cited concrete examples of achievements, highlighting work with customs service prescribers and efforts to improve the image of private companies in Tunisia.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of giving people hope, expressing the need to create more businesses to absorb the country’s exceptional talents, all with the aim of improving the business environment and image of private companies, while pleading for adequate financing.
