Can Babler become chancellor? This question can probably only be answered if he is to be sworn in to this office. At least the party conference was not a stumbling block.
Innsbruck (OTS) – After the chaotic party conference, when Andreas Babler was only able to celebrate his narrow success in the fight once morest Hans Peter Doskozil following days, a question was discussed: Will the SPÖ manage to return to the Chancellery with Babler at the helm? And if so, can Babler even be chancellor? From the bourgeois side, the SPÖ under Babler is accused of taking a left-wing course. The political opponent secretly hoped that the SPÖ would use its party conference to further self-destruct. Despite headwinds from Burgenland and the Vienna City Hall, the comrades did not want to create a cheering atmosphere among the civil onlookers. The Social Democrats exercised unity by often interrupting Babler during his speech with loud applause, electing him leader with 88.8 percent.
And what regarding the left course now? Yes, you have to say it soberly. At their party conference in Graz, the Social Democrats appeared combative, passionate and, above all, social democratic. What a surprise.
Even if there will still be SPoilers who will turn up their noses at the worker’s child at the top of the party. Babler surprised. Not only has he sworn the SPÖ to a grueling election year that is supposed to prevent a blue Chancellor Herbert Kickl and black and blue, the party conference yesterday also opened the window for democratization within the party. Because in the future there will be the possibility of direct election of the party leader. And who is annoyed by this? Probably those functionaries in the SPÖ who stand for structural conservatism. Seen this way – a red sign of life.
