If you receive an “official” email from the Federal Tax Administration telling you that they would like to reimburse you for overpaid taxes, do not click on the link telling you how to get the money back! Indeed, it is a phishing attack aimed at obtaining your credit card data.

A mishap that happened to a reader, E., who received an e-mail telling him that Berne wanted to reimburse him more than 950 francs in taxes. Fortunately, he smelled the scam and destroyed the message. But he gets angry: “I find it revolting to see how we are trying to access our data by any means. Whether it’s a message that the Netflix account is blocked, that a package cannot be delivered, and now also with taxes!

Tax scams are not new, but there is currently a new wave, confirms Manuela Sonderegger, media manager at the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC). This is real-time phishing, she explains. A cyberattack which is one of the most reported cases. This year, the NCSC had already received nearly 7,400 messages of this type at the beginning of November.

How’s it going? If you click on the “refund” link, you land on a page that asks you to enter your personal and credit card details. “The victim is then asked to enter the code they received by SMS on the phishing page,” explains Manuela Sonderegger. And the pirate thus gets what he wants.

The NCSC advises deleting fraudulent emails immediately. And remember that you should never enter personal data such as passwords or credit card data on a web page coming from a link received by e-mail or SMS. “No bank or credit card company will ever ask you by email to change your passwords or check your credit card details,” explains Manuela Sonderegger.
