Vatican City: Bishop Joseph Strickland of the Diocese of Tyler (Texas, US) has been removed to diocesan duties by Pope Francis. The BBC reported that the action was taken following questioning the Pope’s leadership. The Vatican said the bishop had been ‘removed’ from his duties as a result of an ongoing investigation into the Diocese of Tyler.

Bishop Strickland has been a leading voice in the US Catholic Church opposing the Pope’s reforms. Bishop Strickland has strongly criticized the Pope’s stance on issues including abortion, transgender rights and same-sex marriage. In July, Bishop Strickland alleged that the teachings of the Catholic Church were being challenged.

Attempts to change the ‘unchangeable’ will lead to an irreversible split in the church. The bishop also took the stand that those who want change are divisive. ‘I cannot resign as bishop of Tyler because that would be tantamount to me abandoning the flock (believers). Let the Pope excommunicate him if he wants,’-

Bishop Strickland had already made it clear

Catholic media reports that an investigation was also conducted into the handling of financial affairs in the diocese. Bishop Strickland (65) was ordained as a bishop in 2012 during the reign of Pope Benedict XVI.
