Extended Fuel Bonus: Eligibility, Conditions, and Impact – Latest Updates

2023-11-11 12:51:49

In a delicate economic situation, where fuel prices continue to fluctuate, the extension of the fuel bonus has just been announced, which will reassure motorists with the most modest incomes. Indeed, from next year, the fuel allowance of 100 euros, initially granted to certain workers, will be extended to 1.6 million additional beneficiaries, bringing the total cost of this initiative to around 600 million euros.

With this measure, 60% of low-income workers who use their personal vehicle to get to work will be able to benefit from this fuel allowance, whereas the figure was 50% previously. This aid will affect a total of 1.6 million additional people. In fact, it will significantly reduce the burden of moving financially vulnerable people to their workplace.

So what are these new eligibility conditions?

It must be said that even the eligibility conditions for this compensation have been adjusted. Previously, a single person did not have to earn more than 1,300 euros net per month to benefit from aid, while a couple with children did not have to exceed 3,900 euros. In 2024, these thresholds will be revised upwards. The amount of aid will reach 1,600 euros for a single person and 4,800 euros for a couple with two children. As for the other conditions, they remain the same.

The beneficiaries must certify on their honor that they use their vehicles to go to work and make the request before the end of March on the tax website. Eligible vehicles include cars, motorcycles and two- or three-wheel scooters, whether with combustion, hybrid or electric engines. It is also important to note that the check is paid per person and not per household. Thus, a family owning two vehicles can receive 200 euros.

Fuel allowance: “ one-off, very limited assistance » ?

Although this fuel allowance is seen as real financial support by some citizens, experts question its effectiveness, considered limited in countering the rise in fuel prices. “ Rather, this corresponds to the equivalent of a reduction of one cent in gasoline over six months if you take your vehicle and drive 1,000 kilometers per month. It is a one-off, very limited aid, which does not radically change things », underlines Mathieu Plane, economist at the OFCE. However, in this period of scarcity, any help is welcome, especially for the most precarious.
