Meta Messaging recently introduced an option to protect your IP address when making calls.
As the small text that accompanies this feature explains, “enabling the option will prevent anyone from determining your location. Calls made on this device will be relayed securely through WhatsApp servers.“
“Most of the messengers people use today have peer-to-peer connections between participants. This direct connection allows for faster data transfers and better call quality, but it also means that participants need to know each other’s IP addresses“, explain Daniel Sommermann, Sebastian Messmer and Attaullah Baig from WhatsApp on the app’s blog. “IP addresses may contain information that some of our most privacy-conscious users care regarding, such as their geographic location or their Internet service provider.“
If you want to protect yourself, simply:
Go to the application settings Click on Confidentiality Then scroll to the “Advanced” submenu And activate the option
Be careful though, this protection will have an impact on call quality. But that’s the price you pay for not guessing your location. “As always, your calls are end-to-end encrypted, so even if a call is relayed through WhatsApp’s servers, WhatsApp cannot listen to your calls“, specifies the blog article in conclusion.
