Texas Longhorns Win 86-59 Against Delaware State: Game Recap and Postgame Notes

AUSTIN, Texas — Graduate guard Max Abmas recorded a team-high 19 points and sophomore forward Dillon Mitchell added a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to pace No. 18/18 Texas (2-0) to an 86-59 win once morest Delaware State (0-2) on Friday night at Moody Center. The Longhorns converted 52.8-percent (28-53) from the floor, including 54.5-percent (12-22) from three-point range, and 85.7-percent (18-21) from the free throw line in the victory.

Abmas hit 6-of-12 field goals, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and 3-of-3 free throws and added five assists and one steal in 35 minutes. Mitchell converted 5-of-7 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws while tying his career high with four assists to go along with one blocked shot and one steal in 26 minutes. Graduate guard Ithiel Horton tallied 18 points while hitting 5-of-6 threes and added three assists and three steals in 28 minutes, and junior guard Tyrese Hunter posted 13 points (4-7 FG, 4-4 FT), five assists and two steals in 30 minutes.

Texas recorded 22 assists on 28 field goals made and has recorded at least 20 assists in each of its first two games. Five different Longhorns registered at least three assists for the second-straight contest.

A Jevin Muniz three-pointer gave the Hornets a 9-6 advantage with 14:16 remaining. The Longhorns scored five-straight points to grab an 11-9 lead following a Chendall Weaver three-pointer at the 13:15 mark. Delaware State answered with a Muniz layup and a Raymond Somerville jumper to take a 13-11 advantage with 11:58 left, but that would mark the final lead of the contest for the Hornets.

Texas used an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to grab a 19-13 cushion following a Mitchell jumper at the 8:47 mark. After a Martaz Robinson jumper trimmed the margin to 32-28 with 2:31 remaining, the Longhorns closed the half with a 7-2 spurt to take a 39-30 lead into the break.

A Brock Cunningham jumper gave Texas a 52-40 advantage at the 15:19 mark, but the Hornets answered with a 5-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 52-45 following a Muniz three-pointer with 14:03 left. A Khyrie Staten layup pulled the Hornets to within 57-50 at the 10:13 mark, before a Mitchell layup with 10:00 remaining sparked a 27-2 blitz over the next eight minutes that resulted in an 84-52 cushion following a Chris Johnson three-pointer at the 2:11 mark.

Texas returns to action with a home contest once morest Rice (1-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised by Longhorn Network.
