[Newtalk新聞] Ahead of this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit, the United States and China have had frequent high-level interactions in recent months. U.S. President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet in the San Francisco Bay Area on November 15Whether the two can slow down the relationship between the two countries at a time of severe global situation has attracted much attention.

“Deutsche Welle” (DW) reported yesterday (10th) that experts analyzed that “the meeting between Xi and Xi through the APEC summit will at best help the United States and China resume dialogue and stabilize relations. It is too much to hope for a pick-up in bilateral exchanges.”

The meeting on November 15 was the second face-to-face meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping during his term as president. U.S. officials said the meeting was wide-ranging and would discuss issues such as Israel’s war with Hamas, Taiwan, the war in Ukraine and election interference. Analysts predict the summit may achieve some modest accomplishments, perhaps restoring military communications and limiting the flow of the Chinese-made painkiller Fentanyl. But neither side expects any breakthrough that might reset relations between the two countries.

Bob Menendez, the senior Democratic member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said, “I don’t think the relationship (U.S.-China) has become much warmer. A few meetings will not make the relationship warmer. It may just make the relationship warmer.” thaw”.”

Zhuang Jiaying, an associate professor at the Department of Political Science at the National University of Singapore and an international relations researcher, believes that due to the continued tension between the United States and China, any positive development can be interpreted as a rebound. If the rebound means that a breakthrough seems unlikely, it can at least stabilize the relationship between the two parties. He said that it is indeed necessary for the United States and China to engage in dialogue and coordination on specific issues, such as avoiding military conflicts, avoiding escalation of military friction and promoting certain economic cooperation, but in terms of form, no party is willing to show that it is a weak party.
