The Wallonia-Brussels Federation will take a new turn of the screw to counter the “fake universities“, these establishments which abuse the name of university, high school or faculty even though they do not issue any officially recognized diploma.
Since 2018, a decree has required these establishments to indicate on all their communication media (prospectuses, websites, etc.) and registration forms that their often very expensive training courses are not recognized, and therefore of little value on the education market. ‘job. In the event of an infraction, these establishments can currently be subject to administrative fines of up to 5,000 euros. The adoption of this decree five years ago, however, did not completely put an end to these scams. This is why the FWB government adopted on Thursday at final reading a text which strengthens the sanctions, with the possibility now of imposing criminal measures as well. From 5,000 euros, fines might also reach 15,000 euros in the future, according to the text brought by the Minister of Higher Education, Françoise Bertieaux (MR). The draft decree should be submitted once more this month to the FWB Parliament for adoption.
