On the occasion of the NextGen Masters, which will bring together most of the best players aged 21 and under in Jeddah at the end of the month (including the French Fils and Van Assche), the ATP will test new rules.

Since its creation in 2017 in Milan, the NextGen Masters, which brings together the best players aged 21 and under not qualified for the ATP Masters, has implemented rules different from those in force on the circuit, such as matches in sets of four games, let services not replayed, the elimination of the two points difference at 40-40… This year, for its sixth edition (that of 2020 was canceled), the tournament moves to Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, and the ATP has other innovations planned, as it announced this Friday. Thus, during this NextGen 2023 Masters which will be held from November 28 to December 2, matches will begin immediately following the toss, without warm-ups (a court will be provided for warm-ups before the matches), and a maximum of eight seconds will be allowed between the first and second serves and between the let on the first service (which therefore makes its return) and the second service, and fifteen seconds between two points if the point was decided in less than three shots. Players will also have access to numerous data to know their physical level, their response to stress and their ball striking quality in real time. For the comfort of spectators, the ATP also plans to lower the height of the referee’s chair so that they can see better and to simplify the scoreboard “for better understanding”.

A prize money of two million dollars

However, some rules do not change. The matches will always be played in the best of five sets, in four games with tie-break at 3-3, without advantage at 40-40, fans will be allowed to move during the rallies, no change of ends following the first game and only 90 seconds for each change of ends. It remains to be seen whether the players will be able to adapt. To date, Arthur Fils, Dominic Stricker, Luca Van Assche and Flavio Cobolli have ensured their qualification, while the Jordanian Abdullah Shelbayh has received an invitation. No less than two million dollars will be shared during the tournament.
