After Nigeria, Kenya, or even Benin, Elon Musk’s company Starlink announces the launch of its satellite connectivity service in Cameroon by next year. Cameroon should join around thirty African countries targeted by this technology. This service will allow users to access the Internet in areas where traditional Internet access is unavailable or unreliable. Indeed, Cameroon, like many African countries, faces challenges in terms of internet connectivity. Terrestrial infrastructure is often limited, making internet access difficult. Starlink’s solution might therefore solve this problem by providing a fast and reliable internet connection to the Cameroonian population. According to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng, access to high-speed mobile internet has made notable progress in Cameroon in recent years. “Over the past four years, we have grown from a mobile broadband penetration rate of 18% to 39%, thanks to a range of measures we have taken to strengthen competition and regulatory accountability.” Despite his progress, the government member still admits that there is still a long way to go. During the Ministerial Alliance for Digital Nations, organized from February 21 to 22 in London by the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, announced that “certain geographical areas remain uncovered and access to the internet has not yet achieved universal coverage. Retail prices for mobile phones and internet appear relatively high, especially for low-income people. Like many other countries in the world, Cameroon is faced with the challenge represented by very rapid changes in the digital environment, which has made some of our regulatory and legal instruments superfluous.”

For the deployment of the services of Starlink, its satellite internet access provider in Africa, the American billionaire is joining forces with the African e-commerce platform Jumia. Jumia will be entrusted with the distribution, to users on the continent, of the terminals necessary for the use of Starlink.
