The Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (SBMT) warned that Brazil might register more cases of dengue in 2024 than usual. The possible increase in the number of infections must be caused by the presence of multiple serotypes of the virus in the country.
What worries experts is that these waves of different viruses increase, above all, the incidence of serious cases. Dengue has four serotypes and when someone is infected with one of them they only acquire immunity once morest that type.
Therefore, those infected are still exposed to other dengue variants. For 2024, infectologists are concerned regarding the threat of an epidemic caused by serotype 3. In fact, there are already records of this type of virus in Northern Brazil.
Furthermore, a natural factor is identified as one of the reasons for this possible increase. The El Niño phenomenon, which refers to the continuous increase in the temperature of the Pacific Ocean, and global warming facilitate the spread of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

In an interview with the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, the president of SBMT, Júlio Croda, said that the summer, the epidemic period of the disease, will be “quite complicated”, considering that we might have a greater number of cases and deaths than we had last year.
The expert recommends the creation of a contingency plan for states and municipalities for 2024, in addition to an increase in the number of places specialized in providing care and organizing hospitalization flows during the epidemic period.
In 2023, Brazil is experiencing a wave of arbovirus cases. At the beginning of this year, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Tocantins faced epidemics of the disease. The outbreak caused more than 300,000 cases by mid-March.
Faced with this worrying scenario, the Ministry of Health created an Emergency Operations Center (COE Arboviruses), responsible for monitoring outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya and zika in Brazil. In any case, the recommendation remains to avoid places with standing water.
