Officials and managers working in the food sector said that the sector is witnessing a remarkable expansion by producing companies relying on artificial intelligence technologies, which enhances the speed of achieving sustainability goals.
They told Emirates Today, on the sidelines of the Gulfood Manufacturing 2023 exhibition, which recently concluded its activities in Dubai, that local companies had pioneering initiatives in adopting these technologies, which support the efficiency and speed of production, noting that the use of artificial intelligence systems changes the equation. Previous production, in terms of reducing waste in the materials used in large proportions, as well as reducing emissions, which supports sustainability in the sector.
In detail, Mohamed Itani, CEO of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab Levant for Oils and Fats Management at the IFFCO International Food Industries Group, said that the recent period has witnessed a remarkable expansion in the trend of food manufacturing companies towards adopting artificial intelligence systems in manufacturing processes and a greater trend in automation processes. In production.
He added that relying on artificial intelligence technologies supports the sector’s sustainability goals, with the ability of these technologies to reduce waste in the production processes of used materials, in addition to relying on them to rationalize energy use at greater rates.
Itani pointed out that artificial intelligence will significantly change the food industry equation, explaining that it will not reduce the presence of human cadres, but rather will change the need for cadres with different skills in production and supply chains.
He stated that sustainability, increasing efficiency, and speed of production and supply are among the most prominent goals of the food industry sector, which is provided by relying on artificial intelligence technologies.
For his part, the Commercial Director of Food Sector Activities at the Dubai World Trade Center, Jaafar Shubar, said that the UAE is one of the first countries to adopt artificial intelligence technologies in various fields, including the industrial sector, noting that local and regional food industry companies are witnessing a noticeable expansion in reliance on Artificial intelligence in production chains.
He stated that the trend towards artificial intelligence and automation in the food industry sector was one of the most prominent features of the activities and pavilions of the Gulfood Manufacturing Exhibition in its last session, which confirms the importance of using artificial intelligence in the sector at the global level currently, in addition to sustainability trends.
Shubar added that relying on artificial intelligence technologies in food production supports achieving sustainability goals, as much as it supports production improvement and provides material added value to companies that rely on these technologies for their production.
In turn, the General Manager of Swiss Log Middle East, which operates in the food sector, Rami Younis, confirmed that automation and reliance on artificial intelligence technologies help companies face the challenges of food supply chains and enable them to confront and overcome the various variables during production and distribution to a greater extent.
He explained that “robotic” systems enhance increased productivity in food industries, reduce production cycle time, and respond quickly to any changes occurring in the production process, in addition to the environmental benefits of reducing carbon emissions, especially in light of the country’s commitment to reaching net zero emissions by 2050. .
He added that relying on these systems also supports higher profitability rates for companies and easier management of production, supply and storage operations.
Younis stated that with the world population expected to grow by three billion people during the year 2050, food and beverage manufacturing companies will increase their production, but by relying on smart systems in their operations, they will reduce emissions and waste.
