Vienna (OTS/RK) Vienna is officially in the run-up to Christmas: Mayor Michael Ludwig, together with South Tyrolean Governor Arno Kompatscher, carried out the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree on Rathausplatz today. After dark, the two state governors made the lights on the tree and the entire Christmas world in the town hall park shine.

Mayor Michael Ludwig: “As a fixture of the Advent season in our city, the Vienna Christmas market on Rathausplatz conveys hope, joy and confidence, even in turbulent times of several wars and shocking news. The lights that we are lighting up today on the beautiful South Tyrolean tree should be a sign of cohesion in our society. We must not allow ourselves to be divided by terror and hatred. Let’s focus on togetherness and not on what divides us. I wish all visitors a contemplative and happy time at the Vienna Christmas market and thank Governor Arno Kompatscher for the tree, which also represents the good relationship between our countries.”

“This tree is a sign of our connection to Vienna and Austria. I hope that all Viennese and the guests at the Vienna Christmas market enjoy this little piece of South Tyrol and wish everyone a peaceful pre-Christmas season,” said South Tyrol Governor Arno Kompatscher.

Since 1959, the federal states and South Tyrol have been giving the people of Vienna a tree for the Christmas season. This year the Christmas tree for the Vienna Christmas market on the town hall square comes from the Rautal am Enneberg in South Tyrol. The 28 meter high and around 115 year old spruce tree was felled in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park in mid-October and then safely transported to Vienna.

The Christmas market and ice dream offer attractions for young and old

From now on, the decorated Vienna Christmas tree will outshine the Vienna Christmas market on Rathausplatz. This is open once more this year until December 26th. Like last year, almost 100 market stalls await visitors with a wealth of sweet and savory dishes as well as well-known hot drinks such as punch, mulled wine and the like. All food stalls are organically certified by a certification body. The tiered carousel is there once more this year, as is the “Herzerlflug”, in which a large, glowing heart floats above the heads of visitors to the Herzerl tree every 30 minutes from dusk.

The indoor catering brings Viennese coffee house culture directly to the town hall square; due to the great popularity, it was increased to 200 seats. Children between the ages of three and twelve can do crafts and play in their own children’s hut every day. Anyone who visits the nativity trail with its hand-made nativity scenes and rides away from the market will experience a lot of Christmas atmosphere and good entertainment. In addition, the Eistraum at the Christmas market with an area of almost 3,000 square meters offers icy fun until January 7, 2024.
