PFOA and PFAS Contamination in Beringen: Investigating the Source

2023-11-10 16:32:32

After dioxins, PFAS contamination was also found in eggs at two locations in Beringen (province of Limburg), according to a study that the action group “Leefbaar Tervant” (Livable Tervant) commissioned from the Toxicowatch organization.

“The highest PFAS result was found in Beringen, 2,900 meters from the new Bionerga garbage incinerator,” reads the Toxicowatch report.

The PFAS investigation was conducted by the organization at two chicken coop sites, where significant levels of dioxins were found in eggs in 2022.

According to Toxicowatch, 1.9 and 5.1 micrograms of PFOA equivalents per gram of product (μg PFOA eq./g product) were found in eggs. Compared to values observed around other incinerators in Europe, Beringen eggs obtain the lowest scores.

The organization admits, however, that further investigation is needed to determine that garbage incineration is the cause of PFAS contamination and recommends a follow-up study of PFAS in vegetation and chicken eggs at several locations in Beringen .

Bionerga incinerator, possible source of pollution?

The report is not explicit, but it suggests that the Bionerga incinerator is a possible source of pollution. The company denies that the furnaces operate at too low a temperature and that the flue gas cleaning plant does not remove the substances effectively.

The Leefbaar Tervant action group is calling on Flemish Environment Minister Zuhal Demir to expand the investigation into determining the source of PFAS dioxins.
