Within the framework of the First International Meeting of the Comprehensive Care Program for the Sick Doctor (PAIME), a round table has taken place that has addressed the “current vision of the health of the Medical professional and its protection from the organizations that represent them and the national health systems” and which has included different experts from Europe and Latin America. Its main conclusion has been the need for a homogeneous international legal framework for the practice of Medicine.
In short, Ledia Lazeri, regional adviser for Mental Health at the WHO Regional Office for Europe, has pointed out that there are many health professionals who “feel insecure and do not have job guarantees and minimum professional conditions.” For this reason, she has advocated for “legislating safety” as a priority measure to protect the mental and physical health of health workers. In addition, she has pointed out that low salaries are one of the factors that affect the well-being of health workers. For this reason, she has proposed “improving working conditions” but not only in terms of salary but “with mediation services for interpersonal relationships and conflicts between colleagues and bosses, security measures and comprehensive support.”
A homogeneous international legal framework
Anna Rowland, assistant director for Policy and Business Transformation, told how the General Medical Council (GMC) has investigated the factors that affect the mental health of doctors in the United Kingdom. According to Rowland, “the Mental health of health professionals is closely related to stress of the workplace and personal relationships. One more reason to generate stability with a homogeneous international legal framework. For his part, the former president of the CGCOM, Serafín Romero, highlighted, in his speech, that PAIME “was born to serve doctors” but “has been pivoting to serve their health, not their illness.” Furthermore, he has highlighted that “the medical profession is the only profession that has recognized that we get sick and that has generated the necessary mechanisms to guarantee good practice and ensure the safety of patients.”
