The scene called out. In the central circle before the match once morest Maccabi Haifa, only nine players from the Spanish club were present. The call was missing central defender Aïssa Mandi and winger Ilias Akhomach, who refused to participate in the minute of silence imposed by the Maccabi Haifa club, in tribute to the Israeli victims.

Before the meeting, Villarreal had warned according to ASthat his delegation would respect this moment of contemplation on a personal basis for all the victims of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, without distinction of any kind.

The match which took place behind closed doors in the Larnaca stadium in Cyprus then took place normally. Trailing, Villarreal reacted at the end of the match and won thanks to goals from Alejandro Baena and Alexander Sorloth (2-1).
