Volkswagen announced that the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport were named 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

They join the 2023 ID.4 on the 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+ list.

To qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award in 2023, a vehicle must score well in the Institute’s updated side test, as well as the driver’s side small overlap front, passenger side small overlap front and original moderate overlap front.

Acceptable or good headlights must be standard on all trims, and a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian assessments must be available.

The 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport come with a standard front crash prevention system that earns advanced ratings in both daytime and nighttime pedestrian crash avoidance tests, and both available headlight systems earn good ratings.

Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE® advanced driver assistance technology is standard on all 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models, and features practical semi-automatic capability. On the road, IQ.DRIVE features lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel to make driving easier.

In the city, IQ.DRIVE alerts you to unexpected obstacles in front of you and monitors your surroundings to help make driving safer.

The system uses a front and rear radar, a front camera and several ultrasound sensors to collect data from the surrounding area, enabling Travel Assist (semi-automatic driving assistance); Forward Assist (forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring); Active Side Assist (Blind Spot Monitor); rear traffic alert; Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop and Go; Lane Assist (lane keeping system); and Emergency Assist (semi-automatic vehicle assistance in case of medical emergency).

Front Assist is intended to warn drivers of possible frontal collisions (Forward Collision Warning) with vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians and, in some cases, provide automatic braking assistance (Automatic Emergency Braking).

It can also detect cyclists or pedestrians traveling parallel to the vehicle and alert the driver. Within the physical limits of the system, Forward Collision Warning warns the driver of potential critical forward collision situations, both acoustically and visually via a warning symbol in the instrument cluster if the car is traveling above 18 mph.

Additionally, an automatic jerk of the brakes can warn the driver of danger. If the driver does not brake, automatic emergency braking is activated to help slow the vehicle.

If the vehicle travels below 30 km/h and the system detects a possible frontal collision, automatic emergency braking is activated without prior acoustic and visual warning. If the brake pedal is depressed but the driver brakes too gently, the system increases the braking pressure (Braking Support).

In addition to IQ.DRIVE, the 2024 Atlas family has standard exit warning and available Park Distance Control, Park Assist (Park Steering Assist), Dynamic Traffic Sign Display, Head-up Display, Predictive ACC, Light Assist (high beam control for headlights) and area view (aerial view camera).

MSRP for the 2024 Atlas starts at $37,725 and destination is $1,350. MSRP for the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport 2.0-liter starts at $36,715 and destination is $1,350.

IIHS launched its front crash prevention rating program in 2013 to help consumers sort through the maze of available technologies and focus on the systems they believe are most effective.
