Cancer be you

Invaluable support brings comfort to a family from Val-des-Monts, whose mother is suffering from stage 4 cancer. To finance an important treatment in Sherbrooke which might save her time, Stéphanie’s two great friends Lamoureux have decided to set up a donation campaign on the GoFundMe space.

Stéphanie Lamoureux learned, on October 8, 2021, that she had developed so-called “triple negative” breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease. She was 35 years old. Then began a series of chemotherapy treatments, then a mastectomy, to try to stop the cancer. Despite everything, metastases began to develop elsewhere in the body.
Since August 2023, Stéphanie has been on her third type of chemotherapy. Then, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) recently revealed the worst: brain metastases. Last Wednesday, November 1, doctors announced to the Val-des-Monts resident that the cancer was terminal. At this point, it was estimated that she had between one and two months to live.
A treatment to save time
Stéphanie is followed by the oncology team in Gatineau. “It’s an extraordinary team,” underlines Marie-Ève Cormier, one of the instigators of the donation campaign. The team immediately offered treatment to remove the brain metastases, in Sherbrooke.
“There was a sense of urgency,” explains Ms. Cormier. Stéphanie is now 37 years old and has two children: Camille, 12 years old, and Noah who will celebrate his 8th birthday in December. “We are no longer talking regarding a cure, we are talking regarding finding treatments to treat metastases and slow the progression of your cancer as much as possible,” continues Ms. Cormier.
There will be no hospitalizations in Sherbrooke. The Montvaloise will have to go to the hospital during the day, then to the hotel at night. She will also have to pay for her travel and meal expenses.
“Income started to be a stress,” continues Ms. Cormier. Stéphanie has been on sick leave for two years. His salary is paid by disability insurance, but only regarding 70%. Her partner is also off work in order to support her on a daily basis. The expenses associated with the treatment in Sherbrooke, the duration of which is unknown, worried the couple.
A mobilization that bears fruit

His entourage therefore mobilized. Stéphanie’s two best friends, Marie-Ève Cormier and Cindy Carrière launched a campaign on the GoFundMe space the same day the IRM verdict was announced. “The response was incredible,” marvels Ms. Cormier.
The initial objective, $3,000 to $4,000, was quickly exceeded. As of this writing, donations have crossed $10,500. People’s generosity goes straight to the hearts of Stéphanie and her family.

She also recalls Stéphanie’s goal to “spend as much time as possible in relative, functional health, and [de] enjoy time with your children as much as possible.
“A real fighter”
The Val-des-Monts resident is described as a very positive person. If the certain outcome of her cancer was a shock, the moments spent in the company of her family motivated her to continue as far as possible.
His great sense of humor is also highlighted by many. “She goes to buy wigs because she has no hair because of her treatments, and she does stupid things with them,” says Ms. Cormier, laughing.
Even when ill, the Montvaloise is always ready to help others. Her friend also says that one of Stéphanie’s biggest difficulties is letting people take care of her in order to make a change.
The money raised will be used to pay expenses related to treatment in Sherbrooke, but also for everyday life, to give Stéphanie and her partner a chance to breathe a little. If the worst comes to worst, the unused funds will be used to support your spouse and children in the future, without financial stress.
