Crisis in Qatargate: Francesco Giorgi Breaks His Silence

2023-11-09 07:36:00

Francesco Giorgi, a name little mentioned in Qatargate, but which nevertheless has all its importance. The Milanese is none other than the husband of the Greek MEP, Eva Kaili, with whom he has a little daughter, Ariana. SudInfo has just had its exclusive interview with investigators.

Our colleagues from SudInfo revealed the information this morning: he and Panzeri found themselves in the same cell in Saint-Gilles.

Francesco Giorgi is a former parliamentary attaché and husband of Eva Kaili. He was arrested on December 9, 2022 and imprisoned in Brussels for two and a half months, following Qatargate.

He had been hired by Pier Antonio Panzeri, who asked for a large loan in exchange for his position. More than €100,000, or €1,500 per month, for a few years.

Last February, the newspaper “Times” revealed that Giorgi was incarcerated in the same prison, in Saint-Gilles, as the deputy, despite the precautions taken to separate them. A fact that our colleagues from SudInfo confirm today.

“I considered it torture”

The story goes even further, since an error by the prison management allowed them to find themselves in the same cell for a few days. These revelations, made by SundInfo, highlighted the errors and negligence in this affair.

Giorgi’s testimony says a lot on this subject: “If I am wrong, the reasons justifying preventive detention concern the disappearance of evidence, the risk of collusion, flight or reiteration on the part of the detainee (…) Concerning collusion, I inform you that I found myself in a stupor , two hours in the courtyard with Mr. Panzeri and Mr. Figa-Talamanca and, above all, I shared the same cell as Mr. Panzeri for three days. I considered it torture.

Giorgi explains that he was initially placed in a cell with a Chilean before being transferred to the A wing for his protection.

“I’m really scared for my life.”

He also mentions that he has a little girl waiting for him in Brussels and that fleeing to Qatar or Morocco is not an option for him. “Morocco and Qatar are countries that probably want me dead given the scandal and the damage to their global reputation as revealed by the investigation“.

Giorgi considers all these facts to be incredibly serious. He believes that these circumstances give him no reason to continue to collaborate with the judicial authorities. “I feel as if I had thrown myself into the void, without a parachute“, he adds, expressing his dismay.

The police then ask him if he has been subjected to pressure or threats since his arrest. He confirmed that he feared being assassinated by Moroccan or Qatari agents, or that his daughter would be kidnapped. “The inmates recognize me. This makes me uncomfortable. My life is in danger.“.

He feels some pressure, because he knows the network of these two countries and has witnessed their ability to manage money and infiltrate. He expresses his fear for his own life, that of his family and especially that of his daughter. “Imagine if they took my daughter. As an Italian, I know what the mafia is. I’m really afraid for my life, for that of my family and my little one. I am in a very fragile psychological state.”

Saint-Gilles prison described as “inhumane”

The policeman asks him to clarify his feelings and he replies that he knows that “these countries can do very badly. I live in terror especially for my daughter. I don’t want to pay more than I did“.

Another source reveals that Giorgi had to wait a month before he might finally change his (under)clothes. He describes the conditions of detention as “inhumane and undignified, where the rights of detainees are not respected“. According to him, the detainees are “at the mercy and depend on the availability of guards“. He describes the Saint-Gilles prison as a real scandal, thus expressing his indignation.
