Linz (OTS) – Economic policy in times of high inflation – WIFO boss Univ. spoke on this topic. Prof. MMag. Gabriel Felbermayr, PhD at the last general meeting of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor. By calling for a rent cap, Felbermayr is following the same lines as the Chamber of Labor when it comes to combating inflation.
What happens next given the high inflation? How can you counteract this? And what should you invest in now? Univ addressed these and other questions. Prof. MMag. Gabriel Felbermayr, PhD, head of WIFO, during his presentation at the general meeting of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor.
Price inflation in Austria higher than in the Eurozone
“The distance to the euro zone is what worries me the most,” says Felbermayer when comparing inflation developments in Austria with other countries. “At the beginning of 2023 it became clear that our inflation was outpacing that of the eurozone. That was also the point at which we as WIFO called for a rent cap.” A look at history also shows: In the past 23 years, prices in Austria have risen by around 49 percent, while prices in the euro area have risen by “only” on average “36 percent.
Combat inflation with rent controls, transparency and a housing offensive
As measures to combat inflation, the WIFO boss suggests a large-scale initiative in the area of renewable energies and housing. Always under the premise that anti-inflationary measures advance the green transformation. Felbermayr is also in favor of a rent cap and more price transparency. In the future, a price commission might, for example, act as a “watch dog” and highlight price usury in the media.
