TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — On Wednesday, South Columbus High School in Tabor City held its annual Veteran’s Day program, honoring all who have worn the uniform.
The school’s JROTC class helped lead the program, with special performances of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ and ‘God Bless the USA’ by the chorus class.
Guest speaker, Timothy Lance, served in the United States Army for 28 years.
He said although he has retired, he’s still a soldier at heart.
“We declare, ‘once a soldier, always a soldier,’” Lance said.
Lance also served as a chaplain during his time in the Army. He is now the pastor of ‘Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church.’
“We nurture the living, we care for the wounded, and we honor the deceased,” Lance said.
He said he enjoys sharing his dedication to his country with children and hopes he inspires them to serve as well.
“I often encourage them, especially if they haven’t decided to go to college, I try to encourage them to go into the service,” Lance said.
Richard Harrelson served as a ground electronics technician for 20 years in the United States Air Force. He retired as a Master Sergeant.
He said he has been attending South Columbus’ Veteran’s Day program for years and appreciates the recognition.
“it’s an awesome experience, I can’t describe it,” Harrelson said.
Veterans were then served a meal, donated by several restaurants in the community who wanted to join in on thanking the men and women for their service.
