Belgian Cats FIBA 6 vs Poland FIBA 44: Qualifying for Euro 2025 – Match Recap and Analysis

2023-11-08 22:07:55

For their return following the European title won in June, the Belgian Cats (FIBA 6) fell hard once morest Poland (FIBA 44) by losing 62-67 for the first day of qualifying for Euro 2025. Many too imprecise, they always raced behind without ever meeting them.

For this meeting, the coach Rachid Meziane might count on his usual five with Julie German, Antonia Delaere, Emma Meesseman, Julie Vanloo et Kyara Linskens. Far from coming to Antwerp as expiatory victims, the Poles directly put the Cats in difficulty and even led 10-17, forcing Méziane to call for his first time out. Not very precise, the Cats still managed to come back to 14-18 just before the end of the first quarter.

The second was even worse for the Cats who saw the gap increase to 17 before finishing better to still be trailing 24-36 at the break. Generally speaking, it was the realization that was lacking for the Cats who had tried their luck nine times more than the Poles but had a much lower success rate: 27.3% once morest 58.3%. Although it wasn’t over yet, the Cats no longer had a choice and had to wake up to avoid being hit.

Better in their match, the Cats then moved up before ending the third quarter with three baskets which brought them to five points (44-49). Everything was fully revived as the public gave more and more votes in support of their team. At the end of the suspense, the Cats still failed to equalize and go ahead even though they had managed to come back to two small points in a rather strange and rhythmless fourth quarter. The Cats ultimately lost 62-67.

This surprise defeat is obviously a hard blow for the Cats as only the first in each group and the four best second will qualify for the final phase. Azerbaijan (unclassified) and Lithuania (FIBA 46) complete Group C.
