New feat on the part of the surgical corps. This Tuesday morning, the Foch hospital in Suresnes (Hauts-de-Seine) announced, in a press release, that the third uterus transplant, following 2019 and 2022, took place successfully in France. The operation, which took place on October 21, lasted no less than 18 hours and mobilized 20 caregivers, according to France Inter which revealed the information. This feat was made possible thanks to the expertise of Jean-Marc Ayoubi, head of the gynecology-obstetrics and reproductive medicine department at Suresnes hospital.
Océane, 30, suffers from Rokitansky syndrome (MRKH), a disease that affects one in 4,500 babies. Its main symptom: the absence of a uterus at birth. It is therefore impossible to have a child.
This was without counting the intervention of his mother, Gaëlle, aged 57. She offered to give him her uterus. “I have always been very confident, and when I saw a report on the first uterus transplant in France, four years ago, I offered Océane mine,” she tells France Inter.
The first two transplanted women became mothers
Today, her daughter realizes the gift her mother gave her. “I still have an organ from my mother in me, which is quite a strong symbol,” breathes the one who thought she would never be able to give life. “It was very hard,” continues Océane. “But I always had friends who gave me information on research advances.”
Océane’s dream of becoming a mother comes true once more. Especially since the first two women transplanted in the same way in France both became mothers.
