Health and wellness tourism has emerged in recent years as a significant global trend, influenced by aging demographics, globalization, and a renewed emphasis on integrative health care. The Global Wellness Institute estimates that wellness is a multitrillion-dollar market, with a global expenditure that exceeds 4 trillion (millions of millions) dollars every year since 2017.

Its growth rate has consistently outpaced global GDP growth, with positive gains even in years of global economic downturn (except during the pandemic year of 2020). The growing awareness of mental and physical health, especially highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, has led more people to seek out destinations that offer integrated health and wellness services.

«Wellness tourism encompasses a variety of activities, including spiritual retreats, wellness resorts, adventure and nature activities, specific medical treatments and thermalism. Today’s travelers are not only looking to escape their daily routine; “They are investing in their longevity, looking for destinations that offer a deep connection with nature, local culture, and opportunities for personal development and inner peace,” says Rodrigo Castro, doctor and professor at Universidad El Bosque.

In the global context, Countries such as Thailand, India and Singapore have traditionally been recognized for their medical and wellness tourism offerings. Europe, with its spas and thalassotherapy centers, has also been a prominent destination for this type of tourism.

In Colombia, health and wellness tourism has begun to gain attention. With lush biodiversity and rich cultural heritage, the country presents a unique opportunity for travelers seeking transformative experiences. Destinations such as the Santa Rosa de Cabal hot springs in Risaralda, Hotel Termales del Ruiz in Caldas, as well as the developments of Paipa and Cuítiva in Boyacá and medical and beauty procedures in cities such as Medellín and Cali, are positioning Colombia as a destination emerging in wellness tourism.

“The Colombian government, recognizing this opportunity, has implemented measures to improve quality and competitiveness in health, including accreditations and regulations that ensure the quality of medical services offered to tourists,” adds Castro.

However, challenges remain. According to ProColombia, the country needs to continue improving its infrastructure, quality of service, and bilingualism to compete internationally. Furthermore, it is crucial that Colombia promotes sustainable tourism that benefits local communities and preserves their natural and cultural wealth.

Health and wellness tourism is a booming sector that promises significant benefits for both the economy and the well-being of individuals. As we recover from the pandemic, the focus on preventive health and holistic rejuvenation will surely continue to shape the future of global tourism.
