On the night of Friday November 3 to Saturday November 4, 2023, the central house of Conakry was attacked by a heavily armed commando, according to the official thesis, thus causing the escape of 4 detainees, 3 of whom were finally caught.
The defense and security forces went following the attackers in Conakry. Elements of the army, police and gendarmerie have taken over several districts of the capital. Since Saturday, access to Kaloum has been subject to restrictions. Rolling vehicles as well as passers-by are subject to systematic searches.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the operations carried out by the defense and security forces resulted in 9 deaths, including 3 people on board an ambulance killed at the November 8 Bridge, as well as several injured.
In the upper suburbs of Conakry, several families were terrorized by the forceful raid of the FDS. In the Samatran Village district, Ms. Touré’s family received an unexpected visit from elements of the army. “I heard gunshots. Panicking, I automatically placed the freezer and the chair in front of the door to shelter my children. When they entered the courtyard, they shot at the windows and asked people to get out, but I didn’t go out out of fear. We were really afraid, our lives were in the hands of God,” she recounts in shock.
In the same neighborhood visited by our reporter, the citizens we met said they had witnessed a “violent clash” between the Defense Forces and some members of the commando which left 3 people dead.
A teacher by profession, Ibrahima Sory Camara was alerted by his children to the arrival in their neighborhood of a group of bloodied soldiers. “They told us to get out, otherwise we will ransack your house. They put us and the children on the ground. One of them kicked me. They sent my brother and me 30 meters from our house. They asked us if we were soldiers, I said no. The special forces left with my brother. I was sent to the Sonfonia search brigade where I was interviewed before being locked up and then released following the intervention of a lawyer.
Many Samatran citizens said their loved ones were arrested and taken by special forces to an unknown destination.
The residents of MafancoColéah, a neighborhood not far from the city center, located in the Commune of Matam, also suffered the same terror as those of Samatran. “We suddenly saw a special forces pick-up here, they stopped at the intersection to search bikers, vehicles and pedestrians. They arrested a lot of people and took away their phones.”
Out of 4 escapees, 3 including Thiegboro Camara, Blaise Goumou and Dadis Camara were caught and taken back to the central house in Conakry. On the other hand, Claude Pivi is still on the run.
