The winning book, “Watch over her”, tells the story of a close friendship that takes place in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century. For Philippe Claudel, writer and Secretary General of the Académie Goncourt, this novel belongs to what he describes as “popular literature, in the noble sense of the term”. That is to say “it will be able to be read by both demanding readers and more casual readers”.

“This book tells a slightly unusual story, but with quite unforgettable characters,” explains Eric-Emmanuel Schmittmember of the Goncourt Academy.

“I think I associate art with absolute freedom,” declared Jean-Baptiste Andrea, interviewed following receiving his prize at the Drouant restaurant. “Writing, for me, was conquering my freedom,” he added.

“Sad Tiger” Neige Sinno was one of the three other texts in the running for the Prix Goncourt, but it was put aside because this Monday, the story had already won the Femina 2023 prize.
