These are quite impressive images brought to us by our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws. Indeed, they reported a story that can be compared to a miracle. This morning, around 8:15 a.m., in Wervik, West Flanders, the barriers at a level crossing were lowered as a train approached.
A completely normal and usual maneuver, to which motorists are accustomed. Besides, all the cars that were arriving stopped… but not a teenager on a bike.
Surely in a hurry, he began to slalom between the vehicles before passing the barriers. It was bad for him: the train arrived just at the same time. The cyclist managed to pass right in front of the train which was arriving at full speed, but the teenager still fell, since the train brushed his rear wheel. “At the level crossing in question, there is even a small barrier at the height of the cycle path, for greater safety. This did not prevent the young man from slaloming and crossing,” explained the spokesperson for ‘Infrabel Thomas Baeken to our colleagues at 7sur7.
He was taken to hospital with minor head injuries. Insignificant injuries compared to what he might have suffered if he had passed 1 second before…
This incident still caused some traffic disruptions, but the situation returned to normal fairly quickly.
