Winter Holiday Rush: Anticipation, Reservations, and Snow Conditions for Ski Season 2023

We wrote it just a few days ago, Belgians are rushing for the winter holidays. If sunny destinations are popular, this is also the case for winter sports. The Belgian public is a big fan of ski holidays, and the trend is towards anticipation. “As the winter season approaches, five out of ten Belgians have already declared themselves ready to leave, showing more anticipation than their French counterparts,” we learn via Savoie Mont Blanc.

Tourism: following a record-breaking All Saints’ Day holiday, the rush for reservations begins for Christmas!

But the key to a successful stay in the mountains in the middle of winter is the weather. Too little snow (or too much, in the event of a storm) and conditions can quickly become unpleasant. In recent years, we have too often witnessed late snowfall, and even episodes of very mild weather until the end of December. Last year, several low-altitude resorts had to close their doors a few weeks following opening, with the loss of income that we imagine.

But, this year, the signals are… white. And it’s even, in part, thanks to storms Ciaran and Domingos. The winds were so powerful that they brought precipitation to the high mountains. “The Alps and the Pyrenees experienced their first snow from 1,500 to 1,600 meters above sea level,” confirms Pascal Mormal, meteorologist at IRM. At more than 2,000 meters, we already observe a large accumulation. These are good conditions for the start of the season. Because, if we are not safe from a mild spell in the coming weeks, current grooming techniques will allow us to maintain a nice layer of snow at altitude.”

The news is all the more good as the winter promises to be rather mild, in France as in Belgium. “In a configuration like the one we are experiencing at the moment, it is not particularly cold in the mountains, but there is a lot of precipitation. And as we are hovering around zero degrees, this allows for nice accumulations above 1,500 meters in the Alps and even a sprinkling at the summits of the Vosges.”
