Vienna (OTS/RK) – Today, Tuesday, Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig gave the starting signal for the world’s largest free book campaign “A City. A book”. Together with Vice Mayor and City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr and author Bernhard Schlink, he distributed the first copies of the world bestseller “The Reader,” which was published in 1995 and filmed in 2008. Starting tomorrow, 100,000 copies will be available in bookstores, libraries, adult education centers and city facilities throughout Vienna.
The book is regarding the illiterate Hanna Schmitz, who, in order to conceal her “shame” of not being able to read, becomes a guard in a concentration camp during National Socialism. “It is a book that deals with several very important topics, on the one hand a very critical examination of the Nazi regime, but it is also a love story. And above all, it is a book that addresses the topic of illiteracy. “There are many people in Austria who learned little or not at all to read in their first education,” says Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig. The book aims to draw attention to this. “I am therefore pleased that the Viennese adult education centers offer free courses that motivate people to start reading, even at an advanced age,” the city boss continues.
“It is incredibly important that you develop a desire to read at an early age. Because if you don’t get it at a young age, it’s very difficult to achieve the desire at all. And it is important to me that the love of reading is sparked in kindergarten. As a city, we focus on targeted projects: For example, we take the kindergartens to the libraries in order to get them excited regarding it at an early age. There are also volunteer reading mentors who read to children once a week in schools and kindergartens. By the way, anyone can become a reading sponsor. So that the book can also open up a big, new world for the little ones,” says Deputy Mayor and City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr.
“It is a wonderful invitation to read, to receive a book as a gift. Reading makes life rich,” says author Bernhard Schlink regarding the distribution campaign.
The campaign “One City. A Book” is taking place for the 22nd time this year and is intended to encourage people to read. All issuing points are listed at www.einestadteinbuch.at. (final) red
