Lucas Hernández (27) played at FC Bayern for four years and won a total of ten titles with the Munich team. That something was wrong? Difficult to imagine. But that’s what the Frenchman is talking regarding now.

Hernández in an interview with “Le Parisien”: “In Germany I mightn’t speak the language when I arrived, there wasn’t this cohesion. The players mightn’t help me because we didn’t really get along.”

In 2019, Hernández came to Munich from Atlético Madrid for a fee of €80 million. In addition to him, there were four other Frenchmen in the team at the time: Benjamin Pavard (now Inter Milan), Michael Cuisance (VfL Osnabrück), Corentin Tolisso (Olympique Lyon) and Kingsley Coman. Because Hernández also speaks Spanish, he was also able to communicate with Alvaro Odriozola (Real Sociedad), Javi Martinez (Qatar SC) and Thiago (Liverpool).

The France international continued: “I have had great captains: having Manuel Neuer as captain is impressive because he is older and more experienced. But off the field everyone lives their own life. If you need something, of course they’re there, but it’s less spontaneous.”

It still worked on the pitch: in his first year he won the sextuple of the championship, DFL Supercup, DFB Cup, Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Supercup with the Munich team in 2020. Four more titles followed until 2023.

Last summer there was a separation and Hernández went to Paris Saint-Germain for 45 million euros. The Frenchman said in July: “I had the chance to play there for four years and win everything with them. But I needed another challenge.”

And Hernández made it clear: “I wanted to change my life and return to my country, France, where I speak the language. I wanted to return to a country where I felt more comfortable and at home.”

Nevertheless: The move came as a surprise, as Bayern were in good negotiations with him regarding a contract extension until 2027 and were doing everything they might to ensure his comeback following tearing his cruciate ligament at the World Cup in Qatar!

Hernández now explains the change of heart: “After my injury, Bayern stood by me and did everything they might to ensure that I came back in the best possible way. I felt like I was coming out of this long tunnel. It was the moment when I asked myself: Do I feel good here? Can I imagine staying four more years? Or do I try a new challenge in a country I’ve never played in? I’ve been thinking regarding all of this. I also thought regarding Bayern because they trusted me following this serious injury and offered me a new contract. I put everything on the table and since I’m someone who is spontaneous. Since I like challenges, I told myself it was time to move to Paris, a very ambitious club.”
