The United States on Monday described as “unacceptable” an Israeli minister’s suggestion to use an atomic bomb in the conflict in Gaza and urged all parties to avoid “hateful rhetoric.”
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suspended Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu from government meetings on Sunday following considering atomic weapons as an “option” once morest the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government have repudiated those comments, which we also found totally unacceptable,” US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.
“We continue to believe that it is important for all parties to this conflict to refrain from hateful rhetoric that will further incite tensions,” he added.
In an interview with Israeli radio station Kol Barama, Minister Eliyahu stated that he was not entirely satisfied with the magnitude of the Israeli retaliation.
When the interviewer asked him if he favored dropping “some kind of atomic bomb” on Gaza “to kill everyone,” Eliyahu responded: “That’s an option.”
The official later clarified that his statement was “metaphorical.”
