Revamping European Air Traffic Management: 4-Flight Software Upgrade Disrupts Flights in France

Concretely, the new software should allow better management of flights on a European scale, and would make it possible to respond to the increase in air traffic. If the old tool is still functional, 4-Flight should make it possible to have a harmonized European sky. And you should know that French airspace is particularly concerned: if 3 million air movements are recorded each year, only half concern planes which take off or land on metropolitan territory: by its geographical position, France is a country that many planes fly over.

“Change 80% of the system”

If it has already been successfully tested at the Air Navigation Route Centers (CRNA) in Reims and Aix-en-Provence, it is at that of Athis-Mons that the software will be installed from January 9 to February 14 . This center, located near Orly, manages the Charles-de-Gaulle, Orly, Beauvais and Le Bourget airports.

“This amounts to changing nearly 80% of the French system. This shows the scale of this operation, because generally, it is more customary to change the components one following the other,” explains the Air Navigation Services Directorate (DSNA), cited by BFM Business. And therefore, this update will automatically cause disruptions for air traffic.

According to figures from Cohor (the association for the coordination of timetables at French airports), 16,500 flights will be canceled during these six weeks, including 4,379 for Air France alone. As for knowing which flights will be impacted, intra-European or domestic, it will be up to the airlines to decide. According to Philippe Brieu, the secretary general of the Board of Airlines Representatives – France (Bar) (association which brings together the general directors representing airlines for France), quoted by the tourism professionals’ journal, “there are few chance that long-haul flights will be impacted.”
