The start of November marks the start of the Movember campaign, a campaign dedicated to male cancers to encourage men to get screened. Explanations with Dr Mouhin Jomaa, president of the League once morest cancer in Vendée.

Who says November says awareness month for male cancers, that is to say testicular and prostate cancers. Just like Pink October with breast cancer, the objective of this month of November is to encourage men to get screened. An essential prevention campaign while certain diseases remain taboo, according to Doctor Mouhin Jomaa, president of the Vendée committee of the League once morest cancer.

“Male cancers deserve to be talked regarding!”

“Pink October, it took a little time for it to become the month we know today, so Movember is an action that is carried out internationally. We hope that it takes on the scale of this that we can know in October for female cancers. A prevention campaign will be carried out, but it is difficult because cancer in general is taboo… even if this taboo is lifted and today it is easier and easier. Male cancers deserve to be talked regarding because it is important and above all there is screening that is feasible for these cancers, at least for some of the male cancers.”

Prostate cancer: first male cancer

Prostate cancer represents 26.5% of cancers in men over 65 years old. Solutions exist to detect it early. “For the prostate, there is a screening possible. It is an examination with your doctor with possibly a dosage of a hormone if necessary. It is the most common cancer in men, making up 25% of male cancers and it will generally affect men over 65 years old. There is also testicular cancer, which occurs mainly in slightly younger men and there is no organized screening as such today.. As we do self-palpation of the breasts in women, we would like to ask men to self-palpate the testicles once a month, which is quite simple to do. We would like to make men aware of this gesture from the age of 18.”

The importance of speech

Like Johnny Hallyday or Florent Pagny, many personalities speak out to talk regarding their cancer. A good thing for Doctor Mouhin Jomaa interviewed by Hélène Hamon. This can help to lift this taboo, when we see artists who talk regarding it in a public way, it can help to democratize the word and say that we can all be affected. I think it’s important for people to hear it. This taboo must be lifted, because cancer still has this connotation of a fatal disease, which is the case in a certain number of patients but we see that we are making more and more progress. …”
