Several virologists are concerned regarding the spread of the Nipah virus. The WHO considers this virus worrying due to its very high mortality rate. We take stock.

Nipah virus a cause for concern according to WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Nipah virus worrying following the death of two people last September in India. The progression of this virus respiratory system is closely followed by doctors virologues, some fearing a news pandemic.

Respiratory symptoms like Covid

Nipah virus causes severe respiratory and neurological symptoms like Covid. These symptoms are:
fever,
– headache,
– cough and sore throat,
– breathing difficulties,
vomiting.

In the most severe cases, the infection leads to neurological symptoms : disorientation, confusion, convulsions, coma and encephalitis.

A mortality rate of between 40% and 75%

The Nipah virus is dangerous in view of his mortality rate between 40% and 75%. For comparison, the mortality rate of Covid is 1% approximately. For the moment, the virus seems restricted to India with six confirmed cases including two fatalities last September. The WHO warns, however, that this is the sixth epidemic of Nipah virus in India since 2001.
