Petrol, diesel: how much does a liter of fuel cost in France?
Last week saw gasoline rise slightly by 1.4 cents while diesel, the most consumed fuel in France, continued its decline, losing 0.8 cents. Result: the price of gasoline displays, in France, on average, 1.8391 euros per liter. At the same time, diesel saw its cost decrease, showing an average price of 1.8466 euros per liter.
The price movement is not notable, despite international tensions. The effect of relative stability in the price of a barrel of oil on the stock market. The latter has been sailing between 84 and 86 dollars since the last week of October 2023.
But how much does it cost to fill up with fuel?
Obviously, the price of refueling is directly linked to the capacity of the car’s tank. The bigger it is, the more expensive it is to fill it up. For a 60 liter tank, the current cost for gasoline is around 110.35 euros, while for diesel it is 110.79 euros.
Compared to the previous week, drivers of diesel vehicles saved around 0.48 euros on a 60-liter tank, while drivers of gasoline vehicles had to spend 0.84 euros more.
What future for fuel prices in France?
International tensions do not seem to have a direct effect on the price of oil on the stock market, and therefore on the price of fuel. However, nothing is certain: a simple decision by OPEC, for example, or American crude reserves lower than expected might very quickly cause the price of oil on the stock market to jump, and therefore of fuel at the pump.
The fact remains that, despite everything, French motorists can breathe easy: the price of a liter of fuel is moving further and further away from 2 euros, the symbolic threshold. As a reminder, in September 2023 gasoline and diesel had exceeded, on average in France, the price of 1.94 euros per liter. This resulted, in gas stations, in a price above 2 euros and forced TotalEnergies to cap prices for the whole of 2023. A measure in favor of household purchasing power… which no longer applies.
