In the accused box, there is the tall, talkative blonde, who calmly answers each of the questions asked by the president of the Assize Court. Next to this woman who seems sure of herself, a paunchy bearded man, a little stupid, gets angry and repeats at the end of each of her sentences: “but that has nothing to do with the murder of Mr. Luis ”…
Monday morning, the attorney general, Vanessa Samain, read her indictment, a document of nearly fifty pages crammed with technical information. The investigators used modern technical means to confuse the accused. In 2020, it is much more difficult to commit the perfect crime than it was in the last century. It is clear that many elements converge towards the two sitting in the box. However, they remain presumed innocent and have nothing to prove.
Acquittal will be pleaded
In the process, one of Anneliese Audain’s lawyers, Me Régis Brocca, dismantled the elements presented by the prosecution, declaring in particular that she was incapable of moving a body due to her health problems. The lawyer announced that he would plead, with Mr. Ricardo Bruno, the acquittal of his client, a woman who had plans with Luis Gonzalez Rojas.
Me Fabian Lauvaux, lawyer for Didier Bauwens, did not draft a defense document, but he announced that he would also plead for the acquittal of his client, who claims to have nothing to do with the events that occurred on the night of February 16 to 17 2020.
On Monday, the president of the Assize Court grilled the accused at length. Anneliese Audain responded calmly to each of the questions asked, but she often brushed aside technical questions, preferring to declare that she did not know, that she had no explanation.
He, the adventurer, answered questions, sometimes a little dryly, which irritated the president, maintaining that he was innocent.
Slippers under the bed
What is surprising in this case is the relationship between the accused. We thus learn that Didier Bauwens had moved in, ten days following the events, in the Londerzeel chalet with Anneliese Bauwens. Luis’ son would have surprised them, lying together in an armchair. She had her head once morest his shoulder. “A physical rapprochement between us was impossible. We never kissed each other, following so many years of friendship,” replies Anneliese.
She says that Didier was not domiciled there, but that he stayed with her for some time. If his slippers were under the bed, it’s a coincidence. “We had to put them somewhere,” replies Didier Bauwens.
Anneliese declares that she never considered a relationship with “uncle Didier”, whom she considers almost as a brother, her best friend, her confidant… She did not even consider that others might have thought so, due to their age difference.
Didier already held the key to the house in Bois d’Haine, “to take the dogs out when they were away”, as well as Anneliese Audain’s bank card to do her shopping. She also held a prepaid card in the name of Didier Bauwens in order to make purchases on the Internet.
However, it emerges from the investigation that Didier Bauwens changed his insurance policy in May 2020, for the benefit of Anneliese. “There were 4,000 euros that went to my ex-wife when I died. She left ten years ago. I wanted someone close to me to benefit from it, I barely have any family left,” he says.
The regrets of the accused
Anneliese Audain regrets that investigators only followed one lead, swearing that she did nothing. “There is something missing from the investigation,” she said.
As for Didier Bauwens, he maintains that he is innocent. “The investigators should have looked deeper, knowing that there was a jar of hashish in the house and a history of cocaine. Could he have fallen into a trap? For me, there might have been other research than taking care of the antenna located near my home,” he says.
Finally, regarding coincidences, Didier replies that they exist in all areas, “in murders, as in love”…
