In the NHL, wearing a neck guard is not mandatory.
Players have the freedom to make their own decision regarding the use of equipment, a rule that many believe should be changed following the unfortunate events that caused the death of Adam Johnson.
What’s important at the end of the day is that the guys are safe on the ice. That’s why they all wear helmets to protect their skin… Because obviously, head injuries can be very dangerous.
The neck guard debate has raged over the past week, which is normal. A player died following being hit in the throat by a skate…
The Canadian obviously got the message. Eric Engels published a tweet in which we discovered that the Montreal organization ordered 24 jerseys that have neck protection, which is good news for player safety.
Habs ordered 24 shirts with neck protection to make them available to their players. Suspect a couple might try them soon in practice.

Those who have already played hockey will be able to recognize what I am regarding to say.
Wearing a neck protector on the ice is not a problem. It doesn’t limit movement and it doesn’t interfere with a player’s work.
Some will say it’s a little warmer with the neck gaiter and that’s true. It is, following all, an extra layer on the body… But personally, I would rather be warm knowing that the risks are limited than worry regarding what might happen to me on the ice.
A skate, a stick or a puck that hits a neck… It’s not forgiving. This is simply dangerous and if the league truly wanted to prioritize the health of its players, it would act quickly.
Why wouldn’t we simply want to protect the players, basically? This is the question that kills.
Now let’s wait and see which Canadiens players decide to try on said sweater. The decision is theirs.
Who knows… Maybe by the end of the year, we will have the chance to see players who will have the same style as Tomas Plekanec.
And it seems like I wish that would happen.
