Brussels Municipal Council Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza Strip – Motion Adopted Unanimously

The municipal council of the City of Brussels unanimously adopted a motion on Monday evening calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. In opposition, the MR abstained. The PTB and the Engagés/CD&V voted in favor of the text.

The motion “strongly condemns the terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas which have massively killed Israeli civilians and equally strongly condemns the bloody, devastating and totally disproportionate bombings of Israel targeting in an atrocious manner civilians under blockade in the Gaza Strip; the illegal siege of Gaza and the displacement of the population, contrary to international humanitarian law as denounced by the UN; and the policy of colonization of the occupied territories relentlessly pursued by the Netanyahu government.”

The PTB tabled a motion a week ago on the subject. Satisfied to have sparked the debate within the council, he subscribed to the proposed motion tabled by the majority, like the Engagés, and unlike the MR who deplored the transmission of a text to the councilors, an hour before the holding Of the reunion.

Céline Vivier and David Weytsman tried in vain to obtain a suspension of the session to arrive at a unanimous text. According to the two Liberal elected officials, the motion, which has its merits, deviates in a few points from the position defended by the federal government.

For the first mentioned, there is a need not to make things worse and not to import the conflict, which the adoption of a motion at the local level can, on the contrary, help to do.

For Mayor Philippe Close (PS), whether we like it or not, the conflict has already been imported by some into a city which has 184 different nationalities.

“Events that occur far away find an amplified echo here, regularly mobilizing citizen associations. This imposes on us, as a municipal authority, a political and moral responsibility from which we do not want to evade,” he said on this subject.

“The assault by the terrorist group Hamas once morest Israeli civilian populations, followed by the military response and the blockade of Gaza by the Israeli government of which Palestinian civilians are the too many victims, has for several weeks aroused immense emotion in the world which finds obviously an echo among the people of Brussels… In this conflict, the City of Brussels stands resolutely alongside civilians, whatever their origin, and refuses to distinguish one victim from another victim according to their affiliation”, he underlined, calling for “respect for international law to establish a just and lasting peace”.
