This fall, Deezer and Universal agreed on a model to better compensate artists. Le Point J wondered what we currently gain as a musician when our songs are listened to on streaming platforms, like the giant Spotify.
“Artists earn little, or even very little, from streaming,” explains Yaniv Benhmou, professor of digital law at the University of Geneva and lawyer, with a focus on the creative and cultural sector, particularly artist remuneration.
However, it is not easy to quantify what a musician earns each time one of his or her tracks is listened to on Deezer, Apple or Spotify. “There is a bit of opacity on the exact amount that is donated. We are talking on average of 0.004 cents per listen. A title would therefore have to be listened to a million times to earn around 4,000 francs,” calculates Yaniv Benhamou.
In Switzerland, you don’t make a living as a musician or artist from streaming.

The specialist also specifies that there is “a certain inequality” between the artists present on these platforms: “those who are signed and represented by the majors often have more weight, because the majors manage to ensure that they are included in international playlists, for example. We even talk regarding payolaa system according to which the majors pay commissions so that certain titles are listened to in priority.
