Nearly 300,000 American adults visit the emergency room annually due to the presence of various objects in unusual parts of their anatomy, according to a new analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In 2021, 277,922 U.S. residents had to go to the hospital because a foreign object was stuck in their body.
Among the objects found in the bodies of these Americans were plastic swords and glow sticks stuck in their ears, magnets in their nostrils, as well as steak knives and video game controllers shoved down their throats.
At the rectal level, half of the stuck objects are sex toys, but many other stranger items have also been found, such as marbles, bottles and various waste.
Every year, 4,000 American adults are hospitalized to dislodge an object stuck in their posterior.
Many citizens of the United States also insert objects into their genitals, but cannot remove them. Car keys and USB cords are among the most common items found in patients’ penises, while many women seek medical care following inserting a bar of soap or spatula into their vagina.
Entangled objects are the ninth most common cause of accidental injury among U.S. hospital patients.
Each of these hospitalizations costs an average of 5,000 US dollars, or more than 6,800 Canadian dollars.
