Dancing Blindfolded: A Risk-Taking Performance on Révolution

By dancing blindfolded during his face-to-face meeting on Sunday at RevolutionSean Wathen decided to take every risk possible to prove that he had the talent and creativity to make it to the final.

The common thread of his act was risk-taking. “I told myself that the masters did not expect this level of risk for someone who breaks like me. Usually b-boys don’t push the artistic side as much. I went the opposite way, I decided to do something we had never seen before, surprising everyone. Being blindfolded is very difficult on a technical level.” He also confided that, at one point during his performance, he had completely lost his bearings in space, but he managed the situation well.

For this stage of the show, he also had to deal with a groin injury which prevented him from going as far as he would have liked in his movements. But nothing appeared either.

For this season, Sean decided to put himself in danger and push his limits at each stage. “I think it’s the right thing to do. I also made the choice not to ask for outside opinions, I do not work with other choreographers. The most important thing is to create a concept, add risks to it and embrace it.”

Despite his magnificent performance and his daring, the masters voted for Sébastien, but Lydia quickly pressed her button to save him. “From what I saw, Sébastien was much more prepared, he mastered his concept more. I had expectations of myself, I saw a lot of potential in myself, but I understood their decision.

The rigor of the work is the main lesson that Sean will take away from this stage. “I wasn’t as prepared as Sébastien, and yet I find that I am a disciplined person. Lydia’s rescue still gives me a lot of confidence. I have no right not to push myself hard for the future. I don’t want to disappoint myself or Lydia who saw my potential. Now I want to make her proud for saving me.”
