Dhaka: The Dhaka Metropolitan Court sentenced the opposition leaders who led the anti-government protest in Bangladesh to prison terms. A court on Sunday ordered former home minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party vice-chairman Altaf Hussain Chaudhary to be jailed. The action comes in the wake of a clash between party supporters and the police during a rally held by opposition parties last week, in which two people died and the residence of the Chief Justice was vandalized.
About 8,000 opposition leaders and activists are in jail, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its second leader and former Commerce Minister Ameer Khusru Mahmood Chaudhary. The opposition agitation in the country is strong. The government is taking the stance of suppressing the strike.
Clashes broke out in several places during a 48-hour nationwide traffic blockade called by the opposition. Many police vehicles were set on fire. On October 28, the opposition held a rally of 100,000 people in Dhaka. Two people, including a policeman, were killed in the violence. The Chief Justice’s residence was also demolished. Sheikh Hasina should resign and hold transparent elections This is the demand of the opposition. Rejecting the demand for resignation, Hasina clarified that there will be no settlement talks with BNP and she will suppress the strike.
