The American entertainment giant Disney announced that it would buy back the share of the capital that it did not yet hold in the video streaming site Hulu, which made itself known with “The Handmaid’s Tale”, for a minimum 8.6 billions of dollars. The exact price remains to be finalized with the owner of the 33% of the capital not held by Disney, that is to say NBC Universal, a subsidiary of the cable operator Comcast.
Disney had acquired two-thirds of the shares of Hulu, which was originally a streaming project common to the major Hollywood studios in the face of the rise of Netflix, by taking over the studio 21st Century Fox in 2019. It then took operational control of the platform with the possibility of acquiring it entirely from 2024 under an agreement with Comcast, which holds the remaining shares. Comcast has since exercised its option to sell Disney.
