A unit for difficult patients (UMD) should open on the site of the public mental health establishment (EPSM) of Flanders, in Bailleul in 2027, announced the Hauts-de-France regional health agency (ARS) in a joint press release published with the Lille University Hospital and the EPSM of Flanders. This will be the first unit of its type in the region.
According to ARS Hauts-de-France, “ the Lille University Hospital will ensure the portability of this equipment with the design of a medical and real estate project in collaboration with all establishments in the Hauts-de-France region having a psychiatric activity and which will ultimately be able to refer their patients to UMD“. Thus, the region will acquire such equipment in order to improve the quality of care, public safety and the working conditions of professionals.
Remember that UMDs receive patients receiving psychiatric care without consent in the form of complete hospitalization and whose state of health requires the implementation, on medical proposal and for therapeutic purposes, of intensive care protocols and special security measures.
France currently has 10 UMDs for a total of 640 places, including around twenty patients from Hauts-de-France, she adds.
