Lung cancer is a concern in the Kingdom and the figures for this disease are pushing the community to call for action from the public authorities in order to limit the damage. Indeed, in Morocco, lung cancer is the second most common cancer, with 7,353 new cases per year. This disease thus remains the main cause of cancer mortality, causing more than 6,500 deaths in 2020, mainly in men (88%) compared to women (12%), according to the WHO. The attributable fraction of male lung cancer linked to tobacco is estimated at around 87%, with the possibility of avoiding 3,049 cases of this cancer in men thanks to the prevention of smoking, recalls the Dar Zhor Association. This initiated an awareness campaign throughout the month of November to fight once morest the disease. As the WHO points out, a tobacco prevention policy adapted to the epidemiological situation in Morocco “might considerably reduce the burden of this disease”.

According to an assessment carried out in 2021, smoking is the cause of 4,227 new annual cases of lung cancer in Morocco. The Dar Zhor association requests that the specific measures to combat smoking, provided for in the Second National Cancer Prevention and Control Plan 2020-2029, “be fully implemented and strengthened”. She considers that these measures “are essential for reducing the prevalence of smoking, a major risk factor for lung cancer”. Reducing smoking is a major objective for the prevention of lung cancer, and it is everyone’s responsibility to contribute to its achievement, recalls the association, which invites civil society, health professionals, NGOs and the general public to take action to limit the spread of smoking and lung cancer.
